The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy: An Economist Examines the Markets, Power, and Politics of World Trade

The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy: An Economist Examines the Markets, Power, and Politics of World Trade
Praise for THE TRAVELS OF A T-SHIRT IN THE GLOBAL ECONOMY

"Engrossing . . . (Rivoli) goes wherever the T-shirt goes, and there are surprises around every corner . . . full of memorable characters and vivid scenes."
Time

"An engaging and illuminating saga. . . . Rivoli follows her T-shirt along its route, but that is like saying that Melville follows his whale. . . . Her nuanced and fair-minded approach is all the more powerful for eschewing the pretense of ideological absolutism, and her telescopic look through a single industry has all the makings of an economics classic."
The New York Times

"Rarely is a business book so well written that one would gladly stay up all night to finish it. Pietra Rivoli's The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy is just such a page-turner."
CIO magazine

"Succeeds admirably . . . T-shirts may not have changed the world, but their story is a useful account of how free trade and protectionism certainly have."
Financial Times

"[A] fascinating exploration of the history, economics, and politics of world trade . . . The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy is a thought-provoking yarn that exhibits the ugly, the bad, and the good of globalization, and points to the unintended positive consequences of the clash between proponents and opponents of free trade."
Star-Telegram (Fort Worth)

"Part travelogue, part history, and part economics, The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy is ALL storytelling, and in the grand style. A must-read."
—Peter J. Dougherty, Senior Economics Editor, Princeton University Press author of Who's Afraid of Adam Smith?

"A readable and evenhanded treatment of the complexities of free trade . . . As Rivoli repeatedly makes clear, there is absolutely nothing free about free trade except the slogan."
San Francisco Chronicle

Customer Review: Boring and not informative enough

Worst of both worlds - claims to be anecdotal to get around having to have too much actual information (other than the more boring parts of the history of the American textile industry, but trades in interesting anecdotes for general suppositions and a couple sucess stories.

The last section is very cool and interesting and saves this book from the bin. If you get it, skip to the end.

Customer Review: Informative, delightful, detailed and humane

The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy: An Economist Examines the Markets, Power, and Politics of World Trade

This is not just a fun book which you might infer from the title. It is also informative, scholarly with a light touch, and humane - - treating an apparently trivial subject with breadth and depth in exploring the larger consequences of international trade and the tensions between poor and rich countries. Highly recommended.

The Now Habit: A Strategic Program for Overcoming Procrastination and Enjoying Guilt-Free Play

The Now Habit: A Strategic Program for Overcoming Procrastination and Enjoying Guilt-Free Play
Originally published by Tarcher in 1988, The Now Habit has sold more than 58,000 copies, and is as relevant as ever!

Author Neil Fiore offers the first comprehensive strategy to overcome the causes of procrastination and to eliminate its deleterious effects. His techniques will help any busy person get more things done more quickly, without the anxiety and stress brought on by failure to meet the workplace's pressing deadlines.

This revised, redesigned edition includes a new introduction and a section that provides strategies to understand and deal with the complex role technology plays in procrastination today.

Customer Review: Provides a great way of thinking to help

This book has helped in changing my way of thinking from procrastinator to "producer." I am only half way through the book at this point but it is very good so far. I highly recommend this to anyone who catches themselves saying "I should" do this or "I have" to do that. This book focuses a lot on positive self talk and gives you the tools and language you need to change your bad habits.

Customer Review: Life-Changing Book on Procrastination

******

I give this book six stars, as it is helping me (an overwhelmed workaholic) to overcome a lifelong problem with procrastination. Really. Just from a book, albeit a great book!

The author, Neil Fiore, defines procrastination as "a mechanism for coping with the anxiety associated with starting or completing any task or decision." Procrastination is a strategy to obtain temporary relief from stress, not a character defect or a personal or moral failure (as I'd thought before reading this book).

The book addresses key issues underlying procrastination so that by the time you have finished with the book you are prepared to overcome the habit of procrastination in your life. For example, for me one obstacle I've struggled with (but didn't know it before reading the book) was "the fear that you must deprive yourself of leisure time in order to satisfy some unseen judge". Guilt-free play was something I never did; I rarely played at all, and if I did I felt guilty. The author shows you how to build guilt-free play into your schedule so that you are paradoxically MORE productive rather than less. Another example is I figured out that I viewed my projects as reflections of my worth as a person; the book gave me self-talk so that I can separate my self-esteem from the work I do. These are just two examples; I'm sure that whatever your issues with procrastination, you'll find them addressed here, and then be equipped with the tools to overcome them.

Here is a great quote that the author uses from William James: "Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task." If you're like me and want to end the tyranny of your "To Do" list once and for all, you will absolutely not be disappointed!

Highest recommendation!

Air Bud

Air Bud
Moviegoers and more than a few critics found much to enjoy in this Disney film about a lost dog named Buddy. The canine is befriended by a lonely boy and proceeds to become the star of the kid's junior high school basketball team. Demonstrating an abundance of on- and off-court agility, Buddy can dribble like a pro (no, not the wet kind of dribble), and he never misses a shot. Michael Jeter plays Buddy's original owner who returns to get his dog back (don't worry, he's an unworthy weasel), and director Charles Martin Smith brings a refreshing flair to the climactic basketball scenes. Air Bud was a modest hit for Disney, and the film's entertaining vitality gets a touch of poignancy from the fact that Lucky, the canine actor in the title role, died of cancer not long after the film was released. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Review: Movie for all ages

Air BudIf you don't care for all the violent movies out there now, this is a great movie for the whole family, Air Bud World Pup is another good one. Really enjoyed watching this and I am a senior citizen.

Customer Review: Wonderful Story

As a Mother of 3 little ones back when this movie came out, it was a MUST for my granddaughter. It tells a very touching story in a very entertaining way. The message is subtle to a child but very intense for an adult. I highly recommend this movie! Highly!

Start.

Just start.

Nike says it..."Just Do It!"

We say Just Start!

Doesn't matter if you do not have all the education, training, tools or
manuals....

Doesn't matter if timing isn't perfect in your life for an MLM business.

Doesn't matter if you are not in the perfect place to do what your heart
burns for...and has dream for... in Network Marketing...

whether massive success...or massive lifestyle...

Start. Now.

The least known people in the world who got started now are
millionaires/billionaires...

Steve Jobs.

He started Apple Computer...

totally underfunded...understaffed...misunderstood.

But he got underway.....

He Started.

Bill Gates.

He started....well...you know....that Seattle company....he started in a
dorm room...with no money...

And only one gear...OverDrive.
And his drive is what got him over...the tough spots...

He Started.

Michael Jordan.

He started....and was stopped several times...but he kept starting
over...and over..and well....you know..

He did pretty good....

Boy did He Start!

And the list is endless.....

All great Successes have one thing in common...

A Starting point.An Ignition. A Spark. A first step...

What are you not starting? And why aren't you?

Fear? Doubt? Lack of Self Esteem? Lack of Knowledge?
Bad Parents? Bad Childhood? Bad hair Day?

No Money? No Time? No Credit? No help? No education? ?No Way?

All the "Pat" excuses that everyone accepts as a "reasonable" factor not
to do anything in Network Marketing?

Who sold us on that gem?

There is no "Reasonable" with Creating Massive Success...

Only the "Unreasonable" create new destinies for their life...and
thousands of others.....and change becomes their mantra....

FIRESTARTER Secret:

Reasonable is staying put. Unreasonable is Starting Power.

There are No excuses for not starting.....

You wanna know what Start stands for?

"Success That Always Reveals(a)Trail."

That's why you need to Start.

The trail will not walk itself...(CLUE!!!!!)

What's the VERY FIRST THING you need to do to create
your dream and Passion in your Life?

Write it down.

Break it down into the 3-4 tasks required to complete it.

See it on the Movie Screen in your Mind as Successful.

Review it and Rehearse it on your "Screen"....over and over.....

Get 2 pieces of paper....on one....write all the reasons you cannot do
this...

On the the other piece....write all the reasons you MUST do this....

Tear one of them up....

And if you chose the reasons you MUST....

Start...Just Start.

There's where the Success Magic in a home business is....Being Unreasonable....

Intelligent Marketing: Ways To Make Your Website Trustable

Summary:Want someone to purchase your terrific product or service? In addition to what you sell, make sure you offer them a trustable you too.

Have you ever visited a web site and been attacked by screaming pop-up ads, gotten lost in clutter and banner ads, have things flash and go boom? On the other hand, have you ever visited a site that was informative, easy to navigate and generally pleasant to peruse?

Which site gained more of your trust? Which site would you revisit? The more user friendly building tools you use on your site .... the more trust will be developed with your viewers. Following are some trust-building ideas to consider when developing your own website:

Purchase your own domain name - free of all advertisements (unless you sell, recommend, or are an affiliate of those products). You want to sell your visitors on the content of your site - not the products of other advertisers.
When searching for a host for your site, look for packages that include POP3 accounts (preferred) and alias accounts (second in line). This will enable you to send email from your site (you@yourbusiness.com) which looks much more professional than you@freeemailaccount.com It is easier to trust someone who has evidently made an investment in their business.
Provide a phone number, your hours of operation (including time zone), business mailing address and email address. PO Boxes are not considered addresses. Many companies won't deliver to PO Boxes, and many visitors won't purchase from you if you use one. Work from home? Add a suite or building number to your home/apartment. Or use a service such as Mailboxes Etc. for a real address.
Place at least one way for your visitor to contact you on each page and place your webmaster's contact information on at least the bottom of the front page. This way your visitors can request information from you......and if there is a problem with your site they can write to the webmaster. Even if you and the webmaster are the same person, place the webmaster's e-mail address on the site anyway.
Keep the content of your site current (no more than 6 months old) and include "Last Updated _________" on each page. Even if you don't change the site information (because it is completely correct and updated) do keep the date current.
Place your picture on your "About Me/Us" page. Do you have a staff? Place their pictures on the site too. Provide the name of the President or Executives on the contact page.
Secure your site for purchases.
Do you have an "ENTER" page? You will lose visitors who will go "find" some other site to visit that shows them information right away. Worse than an enter page is an enter page that forces someone to download a program (such as Flash). If you want to use the option of Flash pages, fancy pointers etc., give people the option of viewing them at their convenience.
Include tags with your images to assist the disabled and the hundreds of thousands of people all over the world who use library "text only" computer programs.
Insure that a majority of your pages load in less then 20 seconds at 56K. Many will not stick around much longer than that and will simply move on.
Ask your clients for testimonials and permission to use their whole name on your site.
Put your site though a spell check or a good proofreader

Above the Rim

Above the Rim
A hot prospect threatens his college career by playing in a high stakes street basketball tournament. Starring Duane Martin, Tupac Shakur and Marlon Wayans. Year: 1994 Director: Jeff Pollack Starring: Duane Martin Leon, Tupac Shakur, Marlon Wayans

Customer Review: Kinda Generic

"Above the Rim" is about the city game of basketball, played on asphalt in a rough, physical style, where the rewards are status and glory in the neighborhood. It was shot on location in Harlem, and especially at Rucker's Playground, a legendary court where, in the 1970s, visiting stars like Wilt Chamberlain and Julius Erving would drop by to play with the local heroes.

The movie moves the action up to the present and tells the story of a high school basketball whiz named Kyle (Duane Martin) who has attracted the attention of top college scouts. A Georgetown recruiter has been in the stands for several games. Kyle dreams of someday playing in the NBA and waits anxiously for a letter of intent from Georgetown, which doesn't come - maybe because, in an attempt to impress the scout, he's been hogging the ball and taking unwise shots.

Parallel to high school basketball, but in a world of its own, is the neighborhood Shoot-Out, a tournament held at Rucker's Playground with teams sponsored by local merchants, including drug dealers. Kyle plans to play for a team run by his school coach. But then his best friend, Bugaloo (Marlon Wayans), talks him into visiting a club run by the sinister Birdie (Tupac Shakur), and the kid is seduced by its shabby glamor into agreeing to play for Birdie's team.

This is not a wise move. Birdie is a drug dealer, and that's a fact well-known to the tall, silent Shep (Leon), a former Rucker's star who moved out of town but is now back as a security guard at the high school. Shep was once friendly with Kyle's mother (Tonya Pinkins), and now, as they begin to see each other again, he tries to guide Kyle in the direction of college, and away from the superficial glories of the Shoot-Out.

The movie climaxes, of course, with the big Shoot-Out game, and with a violent surprise that I found less than likely. But that's not really what it's about. It's more about the dreams of poor black kids to use their basketball skills as a ticket out of the inner city.

This is an elusive dream, as the brilliant Chicago-based documentary "Hoop Dreams" demonstrates. Only a tiny percentage of high school stars ever play in college, let alone in the NBA. But kids like Kyle can't help hoping. And both Shep and his mother point out that education, not the NBA ticket, is the real reason to go to school.

The movie lives easily on the streets where it is shot, and the performances - especially by Martin, Shakur and Pinkins - are convincing. We get a sense of the daily rhythm of the character's lives, and for a drama, the movie finds room for a surprising amount of humor, especially in the dialogue.

The movie, directed by Jeff Pollack, was co-written by Pollack and Barry Michael Cooper, who wrote the poetic and evocative Wesley Snipes drama "Sugar Hill." In both films Cooper has a strong interest in family, in how extended support networks can fill some of the gaps left by the disintegration of the traditional family unit.

Here Kyle is a kid in a lot of potential trouble, but also with a lot of good support.

My complaint about the movie is that the plot goes on automatic pilot in creating the character of Birdie. The neighborhood drug dealer is such a standard cliche by now that it's almost as if they plugged him into the movie as a shortcut to a villain. Shakur plays him well, and he makes a satisfactory bad guy, but the subliminal message is that drugs are where the money is. The movie could have come up with more original choices.

Customer Review: no title

Well, here's a movie I didn't want to see at all (I loathe basketball), but I enjoyed it very much. Two actors to watch who are very charismatic - Leon and Tupac Shakur (whose murder robbed the screen of a very fine talent). The former exudes a quiet power reminiscent of Lawrence Fishberne; the latter has amazing eyes with incredibly curly lashes. Another note: I haven't seen a movie that looked this sharp and clear, whose colors were crisp and bright, in many a year. And the basketball shots during the "tournament"! Wow! What editing! Whoever did that really knew his stuff. The story was fairly hokey - good guy, bad guy, competing for the young basketball whiz, and fairly predictable. I did think his overblown jealousy of his mom dating Leon a little too too. But Shakur's portrayal of the local king-pin was very effective. He actually seemed friendly and OK, but the menace below was subtly done. I have seen him before in "Poetic Justice".

How to Turn Your Articles Into A Viral Marketing Stampede

By writing articles you can send targeted traffic to your website at any time without paying a single cent. Articles are one of the best online marketing investments you can make because you write them once and they send you instant visitors each and every day. The more articles you have circulating the internet, the more targeted traffic they will send to your site.

Now, you may be thinking that writing just isn't your thing, but I'm about to show you just how easy it can be.Read on to find out a simple method that will have you ripping out articles in record time.

1. Killer title - The first step is to create a killer title. Authors know that the difference between a bestseller and a dud can come simply through the title of a book. The same thing goes for articles. You must grab the reader out of their chair with an attention-grabbing title. Here are a few to get you started.

Powerful Secret that pulls in thousands of devoted subscribers
3 Strategies that will triple your conversion rate
7 Overlooked Methods that Drive Daily Traffic to your Site
How to Get 1000+ Targeted Visitors a Day
5 Ways to Generate More Traffic Next Week.
Instant Traffic With Expired Domains

2. Grab your audience with an eye-opening introductory sentence. An example might be:

Did you know that 90% of all traffic comes from search engines? Are you taking advantage of this traffic goldmine?

Next, you would uncover your valuable information in the body of the article.

3. The body of the article is the main course of the entire juicy feast. A simple way is to create an outline You could use:

Problem 1 > Solution 1 > Problem 2 > Solution 2 , etc.

If you're writing a "tips" article, you can simply write about each tip, divided into paragraphs.

Make sure your articles are fast and fun. Use bullets, numbered lists, and sub-headings to make it easy to read.

4. Summarize your article with a call to action. End your article by summarizing the main points and getting the reader to take action.

5. Next is one of the most crucial steps: a powerful resource box. This is a 3-6 line ad that sends readers to your website. To get readers to click you must offer a strong benefit. Don't try to sell in your resource box. You must first establish a relationship. So first, try to get them subscribed to your newsletter or autoresponder. Entice them with a free offer. Here is an example of a powerful resource box:

Alli Ross, is the wacky marketing chick at http://www.stickyarticle.com . She also publishes a newsletter packed with powerful tips that will send hundreds of targeted visitors to your site. Grab your power-packed newsletter at http://www.trafficoverload.blogspot.com .

Your resource box should include your name, your website address, a strong benefit, and a call to action.

Each of your articles has the potential to send you hundreds of visitors. Short articles perform the best, usually 200 - 600 words. Be sure that each of your articles contains a killer title with an attention-grabbing opener. Continue your article with a body packed with great info. People won't come to your site if you don't provide valuable information. Do not load the body of your article with links back to your site. This will lower the acceptance of the articles for reprint by other publishers. Allow your resource box to flood your site with quality traffic and soon you will be on your way to increased visitors and increased sales.

Invincible

Invincible
When the coach of Vince Papale's beloved hometown football team hosted an unprecedented open tryout, the public consensus was that it was a waste of time--no one good enough to play professional football was going to be found this way. Certainly no one like Papale--a down-on-his-luck, 30 year-old, substitute teacher and part-time bartender who never even played college football. But against these odds, Papale made the team and soon found himself living every fan's fantasy--moving from his cheap seats in the upper deck to standing on the field as a professional football player.

Customer Review: This Movie Is For Anyone Who Is A Football Fan

I received this movie as a gift and I reluctantly watched it. I wouldn't consider myself an Eagles fan or a Mark Wahlberg fan by any means, so truth be told my expectations were pretty low to begin with. I was pleasantly surprised. It is based on a true story.

If you like movies like Rudy, Rocky, or Vision Quest you will like this movie.

Customer Review: Three Weeks to eBay Profits

Skip Mc Grath takes you step by step from a beginner, to a seller in a very short time if you read and put into practise his instructions.

He also tells you what to sell on eBay giving you a lot of ideas where to find what is easy to sell and how to promote it.

I would recommend this and other books published by this author to anyone who wants to make money on eBay, because he really know what he is talking about. And for my understanding he is a born teacher because he has the pacience to explain in detail what to do and how to do it.

Customer Review: Concrete Help

I don't review books unless I genuinely like them, and I liked this book. The concrete, clear steps are excellent. I decided to use this book in teaching college students how to use the Internet more effectively.

450W Coolmax 80MM Dual Fan with Led Atx Power Supply

450W Coolmax 80MM Dual Fan with Led Atx Power Supply
Coolmax Technology is a rapidly growing company that was founded in the year 1992. Its initial task of providing cooling solutions for electrical and industrial applications using AC and DC voltage fans is its solid foundation.PRODUCT FEATURES: Built-in long life dual 80mm silent cooling fan; One Multi-Color LED Fan in front of power supply; 3 Speed Fan Control Switch (Auto, Low, Medium); Universal Connector Fits Most of Branded Motherboards; Fully support All Intel & AMD series demand specification on all output levels; Over voltage protection, short circuit protection on all output levels; A/PFC or PFIC optional.

Customer Review: Good power supply, not quite as advertised.

I bought this power supply for my tower to be sure I would have plenty of power for all of my drives and so far it has worked out well. The only problem I have and the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is the lack of the LEDs as other people have also complained about. Granted I bought this one from the Amazon Marketplace and not directly from Amazon so it is not their fault, but merchants advertising that they are selling the same product should actually provide the same product and not just a similar product. This is actually the second time something like this has happened to me with a Marketplace merchant so it's something to be aware of when making that kind of purchase.

Customer Review: All right...

The power of this power supply for the cost is pretty decent. It's not the LED model like it states though. Which really doesn't bother me, but I slapped this in a friend's computer and told her it would have pretty lights, and it doesn't. =( Which made me feel like a fool. Minus one star for the false labeling.

The Marketing of Evil: How Radicals, Elitists, and Pseudo-Experts Sell Us Corruption Disguised As Freedom

The Marketing of Evil: How Radicals, Elitists, and Pseudo-Experts Sell Us Corruption Disguised As Freedom
Americans have come to tolerate, embrace and even champion many things that would have horrified their parents' generation—from easy divorce and unrestricted abortion-on-demand to extreme body piercing and teaching homosexuality to grade-schoolers. Does that mean today's Americans are inherently more morally confused and depraved than previous generations? Of course not, says veteran journalist David Kupelian. But they have fallen victim to some of the most stunningly brilliant and compelling marketing campaigns in modern history.
The Marketing of Evil reveals how much of what Americans once almost universally abhorred has been packaged, perfumed, gift-wrapped and sold to them as though it had great value. Highly skilled marketers, playing on our deeply felt national values of fairness, generosity and tolerance, have persuaded us to embrace as enlightened and noble that which all previous generations since America's founding regarded as grossly self-destructive—in a word, evil.
In this groundbreaking and meticulously researched book, Kupelian peels back the veil of marketing-induced deception to reveal exactly when, where, how, and especially why Americans bought into the lies that now threaten the future of the country.
For example, few of us realize that the widely revered father of the "sexual revolution" has been irrefutably exposed as a full-fledged sexual psychopath who encouraged pedophilia. Or that giant corporations voraciously competing for America's $150 billion teen market routinely infiltrate young people's social groups to find out how better to lead children into ever more debauched forms of "authentic self-expression."
Likewise, most of us mistakenly believe the "abortion rights" and "gay rights" movements were spontaneous, grassroots uprisings of neglected or persecuted minorities wanting to breathe free. Few people realize America was actually "sold" on abortion thanks to an audacious public relations campaign that relied on fantastic lies and fabrications. Or that the "gay rights" movement—which transformed America's former view of homosexuals as self-destructive human beings into their current status as victims and cultural heroes—faithfully followed an in-depth, phased plan laid out by professional Harvard-trained marketers.
No quarter is given in this riveting, insightful exploration of how lies, both subtle and outrageous, are packaged as truth. From the federal government to the public school system to the news media to the hidden creators of "youth culture," nothing is exempt from the thousand-watt spotlight of Kupelian's journalistic inquiry.
In the end, The Marketing of Evil is an up-close, modern-day look at what is traditionally known as "tempation"—the art and science of making evil look good.

Customer Review: Lost Memory Recovered

This is one of those "Ah-Ha!" books. We often ask "How did we get into this mess?" David Kupelian's excellent presentation of the facts on each subject restores our memory in many cases of how things developed into this evil mess we are in. A quote attributed to Edmund Burke, an 18th century philosopher: "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing" can justly be applied in many of these cases. However, many "good people" did willingly participated in the marketing of evil until they saw the end result. If anything is missing, it is a stronger call to arms to right the wrongs that we have allowed to take place.

Customer Review: "The Marketing of Evil" Turns the Light on in a Dark Room.

The Marketing of Evil: How Radicals, Elitists, and Pseudo-Experts Sell Us Corruption Disguised As Freedom

David Kupelian is a modern day hero! This well documented resource explains the details of what many of us have suspected- behind the convincing catch-words are dark motives. Altho many have written on this topic, not many have brought the issues to my own doorstep. What I mean is, not many authors dare to call the "good" folks to account. Kupelian reminds me that I'm responsible to live my life with love, honesty, integrity, and courage. He calls us to a high standard and reminds us what the alternative is. I liked the book so well I gave it to one of my high school students who is interested in a career in law and politics. His mother read it before he had a chance! She was also very impressed. I'm recommending it to my other students.

Customer Review: Great webcam

This is a great webcam for the price, i got a rebate on it and ended up only paying 10 dollars and it was well worth it. the microphone works great within 4 feet, beyond that, you have to speak loudly to be heard, but the clarity is very good, and the picture, varies but for the most part is very clear and when using skype and enabling the full screen option, the picture is not grainy or pixelated, it is mostly clear which is not something that i have achieved with the more expensive logitech pro 9000. it doesn't have auto focus and can't rotate, but is very small and compact to carry. good webcam for the price!

Customer Review: Very good product.

Its a wonderful product. Very good video quality and easy to use.

I am satisfied.
